PurePlate Nutrition
Over the past several decades, the United States has witnessed a significant rise in obesity rates, transforming it into a pressing public health crisis. In the early 1960s, approximately 13% of American adults were classified as obese. By 2017–2018, this figure had escalated to 42.4%, with severe obesity affecting 9.2% of adults. Recent data from 2021–2023 indicates that 40.3% of adults are obese, with the highest prevalence among individuals aged 40–59. This upward trend is not confined to adults; childhood obesity has also surged, tripling from 5% in the early 1970s to over 19% by 2020.
The escalation in obesity rates is attributed to a complex interplay of factors. Dietary habits have shifted towards increased consumption of ultra-processed foods rich in sugars, fats, and additives, which are linked to higher risks of obesity and related chronic diseases. Portion sizes have expanded, and calorie intake has risen significantly since the 1970s. Concurrently, physical activity has declined due to sedentary lifestyles and occupational shifts, with only about 20% of jobs requiring moderate physical activity today, compared to 50% in 1960
PurePlate Nutrition was partly founded on these issues. America and most other countries have had an increase in obesity, and that has correlated with an increase in chronic disease rates. Health is the most important aspect in a person’s life, and it should be treated properly. A healthy man can have many problems that can be easily fixed, however, a sick man only has one problem, and that is getting better.
